UNPUBLISHED PHOTOS OF PETER SELLERS
AND SOPHIA LOREN AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS, LONDON 1960

I recently acquired an astonishing collection of previously unseen photos
of Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren from the 1960 Abbey Road Studios soundtrack
recording of the film comedy The Millionairess.
These 37 negatives capture the essence of a unique day in British
pop culture, a day that braided several legends together: Sellers,
Loren, then just-plain George Martin, Loren’s husband Carlo Ponti,
musical arranger Ron Goodwin, EMI Records, Abbey Road and, by association,
They tell the story of Sellers’ and Loren’s arrival, their
rehearsal, recording and playback at the recording studio. They show
a British comedian moving onto the international stage and the stunning
beauty of Ponti’s 26 year-old muse. They also give some intimate
insight into the bizarre private life of Peter Sellers and the life-long
obssessional love of Loren that was to play havoc with the rest of

STOP PRESS: An extremely limited edition set of four prints,
each signed by the late photographer Richi Howell and numbered 1-500,
were created in 1990, in association with the Kent Allen Gallery.
A small number of these sets have become available.
four separate prints, titled ‘Goodness Gracious Me’, ‘The
Recording’, ‘Between Takes’ and ‘The Playback’ are
half-tone, lithographic prints, inset in presentation frames measuring
approximately 50cm x 40cm.
Together they create a unique, impossible to repeat document
